You shouldn't be sad. With a good chunk of these, you're not missing anything. I've read 50.

Today's being Dr. Seuss's birthday, I feel like somebody should mention that none of his books made this list, but Hamlet and the Complete Works both made the list. Well, if you read the Complete Works, doesn't that mean you've read Hamlet too. Or was Hamlet not included in the Complete Works?

Some on the list, I tried but did not complete: LOTR, 1984.

And dude, where's The Godfather???

Anyhoo, he's my list:
5, 22, 25 (2 of 5), 36, 49, 87, 92, 98, 99.

Only #25 was not mandatory reading in my education. So that's one out of one hundred that I read for pleasure, not just to get a good grade.

You don't need to read a book to know what the book is all about. Without having read the book or having seen the movie, I can make references to Of Mice and Men and make it seem like I've read the book. Thus, negating the purpose of having to read the book.

Highly recommend the Kite Runner. A must read.

Eh, you shouldn't feel bad. I only hit 23 of them. Plus:

1. This was from a list of "most popular books in Britain" compiled by the BBC in 2003 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml

2. It's been doctored for this meme, including putting all the Harry Potter and Narnia books in one item and adding more recent books (@WIGSF: The Godfather is on the actual list - #91!)

3. The BBC, as far as I can tell, never said anything about "average person has read x number of these"
