Decency

I've been asked as to my opinion on the Supreme Courts ruling in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church being able to picket in the general vicinity of funerals. I've written about the WBC before and as it should come to no surprise I approve of the court's decision.

Yes it pains me to say anything in defense of the attention whores that are the WBC. I find everything they say and do despicable, but as our 1st Amendment allots, they have the right to be jerks. It's there to protect unpopular speech, as anything else doesn't need an amendment securing that.

It pains me to be a good citizen and feel that people have the right to stand on the sidewalk and insult and degrade someone's time of mourning, but at the same time I wish I could legally make a brick meet Fred Phelps temple.

I do have endless sympathy for the family of Snyder who were the victims of WBC's assholishness. One day the media will simply start ignoring the church and they'll die off and go away. I look forward to that day.

"To me, what they did was just as bad, if not worse, than if they had taken a gun and shot me. At least the wound would have healed." - Albert Snyder.

Why the Supreme Court Ruled for Westboro

I get where you're coming from and they do have a right to free speech...but I don't like it....there should be some type of barrier like they can protest just not within 1000 meters of a funeral...so down the street and around the block type of thing...the family can mourn in peace and the jerks can speak.

I'm in the exact same position as you.

That poor family.

I was listening to NPR yesterday, and they said that Snyder's family wasn't even aware of the protesters until someone told them about their presence AFTER the funeral service. Seems to me that we already have enough measures in place to keep these freaks from interrupting the funerals of these American heroes. And I completely agree with everything you just said.

This may come as a surprise to you, since I'm a Veteran. I completely agree with you. I didn't give 13 years of my life and my knees to tell someone the Constitution doesn't apply to them. I wholeheartedly despise them with every ounce of my being... but, I have the right to block them from protesting, as much as they have the right to protest.

And Miss Ash... they are required to stay at least 150 feet away. They have never broken that rule.
