Olympics

Since Bejing was elected to host this years Olympics much controversy has ensued over a country with a deplorable human rights record making insane amount of profits over the event. The world's attention has been turned to suedo-communist regime with some in the west calling for boycotts due to the abuses in Tibet and their policies with Taiwan.

Now I can see both sides of the argument, so I'm torn. On one hand I don't want our country contributing to the profits of China. Then again most of the products I buy are hand crafted with the blood of the nation's young so I'd really be a hypocrite in taking a firm stand on this.

On the other hand I believe I the Olympics should stop being political and be about sport. Ban any and all athletes who are professional and keep the venues in Greece and Switzerland. If we really want to send a statement to the Maoist government we should just have our amateur athletes go to their turf and kick a bunch of ass like we did in Berlin in '36.

Yeah I'm quite the intellect today. Feel the brainpower resonating through Erik's Ramblings.

Seriously folks lets not punish the athletes who've trained for years, even decades, to compete in their beloved sport. If we are to combat tyranny we must do it in ways that are often more noble such as stop buying their products, pressure Congressman into revoking favored nation status, etc.

Then again we have enough trouble with our own policies that maybe we should fix us before anyone else.

Man I sound like a dumb American....oh wait...

Vancouver is going to host the Olympics in 2010 and there is so much work going into it. It would be sad if anyone banned in 2010 so I don't support using the olympics as a political statement either.

I can stand by no longer!

It's "psuedo", not "suedo". You do that every time you write that, and every time I think of the Phil Collins song "Sussudio". Damn it man, put the silent "p" in there.

Ok, I feel better now.

What? Complex foreign relations issues? I'm not qualified to discuss that.

I just watched this disturbing documentary about women working in shops under deplorable conditions making jeans for other countries....IE us. It was disgusting how they were treated.

As for the Olympics, i'm not sure where I stand, I never watch them as I find them rather boring so.....

Who needs the the olympics for a political platform when we can just issue an athlete beatdown? This olympics should be intresting. I figure if something goes 'wrong' for China, the video feed will mysteriously be cut....

Su-su-suddio!

I've given up trying to tell other countries how to govern their own people. I can't even get my own government to listen to me.

I am in full agreement with only sending amateur athletes. But of course, if that actually happened, China would win every single medal. As they fund their athletes training, therefore, they would be better trained while athletes from every other country would have to work to get sponsorships.

Rawbean - I can't imagine what traffic is going to be like up there in 2010.

Mattbear - Settle down Beavis. I hate the p. I really do. It makes no sense, but then again that can be true for most of our language.

Miss Ash - I've seen similar documentaries, yet I still buy the products. I'm pretty shameful, but I don't watch most of the Olympics either as the coverage sucks.

Mizzle - I doubt we'll get to see much of the protests.

Grace - Yeah I've seen it. I really enjoyed it. I'll add it for a review if that's what you're asking.

Jlee - hehe well you are from Texas.

WIGSF - Personally I would ban any and all athletes funded by their governments.
